Ready-made
underground cities
"This idea of an underground city is interesting. From the little
I read from your introduction to the site it seems that a good site for
a proposed covered underground city would be an abandoned strip mine.
I believe the companies that used to operate these mines are pressed to
find environmentally satisfactory solutions to their demise. A multilevel
underground covered city would be perfect! It should provide enough room
for all the proposed features of a city.
Of course, such a city would have several problems that would have to
be worked out. The so called problem of groundwater flooding at such a
site might actually be the source a solution to the water needs instead.
If this city is to be realistically competitive it must not be isolated
from the rest of the world. There will be a commerce that would provide
needs that it cannot provide.
Anyway, the possibilities of an abandoned strip mine as the ready made
cavern (once covered with a roof) is very challenging." Doug

Back
to the beginning
"The Future, the future is going to take us back to the beginning,
because of all the new technologies etc... Scientists and inventors are
going to take it all to an extreme. And some one is bound to mess up somewhere!!!
The future scares me!! Good luck everyone" K

Fantasy
future
"I can see us
living in floating cities or cities under the ground, I see us in long
tunnels criss crossing under the sea or in flying vehicles that "jump"
from floating city to floating city...I see use virtually wearing 'one
size fits all' computers linked to our bodies through clothing or literally
grafted onto our hands that contains all of our personal finance information,
I see a future somewhat similar to the movie AI and the movie Time Machine
put together. I see Dirty Bombs in future for many countries, as Al Queda
constantly tries to damage the height of the capitalists people, the fear
and panic could drive the idea of control more and more, and lead to further
National Identification Systems through computer cards and 'smart cards'
and possibly wearable computers and maybe even fingerprint readers such
as has been seen in movies like The Bourne Identity and others that predict
likely futures or even retinal readers such has been seen in such fantastical
movies as Charlies Angels...I see more and more security arriving as Terror
stands on the forefront of the World Mind...I see more security...that
is all I see for the future, I see long customs lines, and more private
person travel, I see such type of security features as was seen in The
6th Day movie. Where no matter where you go you must have some type of
ID or you can not enter. That is my future, I am ready to accept it."

Thinking
ahead
"As a personal interest
in the future I was looking a long time for a site like this. A great
part of the future is born in people's mind. Because new ideas are not
conventional many people act sceptic on new ideas and even laugh with
new ideas or said that they are impossible. A basic principle of someone
who's reflecting about the future is to step out the boundaries of thinking..."

A
world set to self destruct
"Sadly, as our technology
advances, there are so many new horrible things to happen. Along with
medical breakthroughs come less death- high population. Accompanying nanobots
(rearranging molecules through technology) positives, come the fear of
molecules creating war weapons to destroy Earth. Our world is advancing
quickly, and with no way to keep off the horrible things that can happen,
we will soon be destroying our own race slowly and without confrontation."

Underground
cities would be too expensive
"The largest
obstacle to an underground city would be the economics of
an undertaking that large, since the infrastructure and ownership space
would have to be designed and built as one. Due to the complexity required
for a sizeable city, the construction would take years, meaning the developer
would have to finance the most expensive part of the construction in the
lengthy early phases without the benefit of income from closings as sites
are sold off. Unlike a traditional city where spaces are created, sold
and used independently, getting to the "green roof" phase of
an underground city would be the equivalent of building an aquaduct, where
it can't be used until the building is complete. Such a limitation would
probably limit these undertakings to the scale of a highrise or small
village." John
